Guitar - Practice, practice, practice...

My brother-in-law expressed an interest in learning the guitar yesterday, asking for resources & pointers. I have realized over the past year that learning the guitar can be relatively simple, but you can spend your life learning new things on it. Here were my suggestions...

Guitar Resources & Pointer

Guitar.About.com (their training is awesome)
Chordie.com (song after song after song)

Learn how to read "Tab" and learn where notes are on the guitar and "scales". I started with chords right away and really wish I'd started with knowing the notes on the neck, because they REALLY helped me learning music. Learning to read music is also important, but VERY complex with the guitar. Practice the hard stuff always, but throw in the fun stuff to keep you motivated.

I didn't want to believe it, but you HAVE to practice daily; 1) to build up calluses and 2) to build up finger strength. Stress balls and grip strengtheners work wonders, though I still am learning to handle barre chords well. Fast chord changes are difficult.

So, in order of importance, 1) memorize notes on the neck of the guitar, 2) learn to read "Tab", 3) begin learning basic chords, 4) play daily for at least 15 minutes, 5) print out some fun and maybe even impossible songs off the web and practice the fun stuff too, 6) practice playing with the pick as well as the fingers (thumb plays bass notes, index finger on 3rd string, middle finger on 2nd, and ring on 1st).

*Finally, there are a thousand ways to play the same stuff. Learn everything as a "guideline" and not as a hard-and-fast rule. For example, if you see play a certain note with the 3rd finger on the 5th fret, you may end up using your 4th finger sometimes, etc.
